The Top Six Most Unlikely Vegans

We all know that there is no one-size-fits-all mold for vegans, but people do tend to think of a certain type of person when they hear the word vegan. It's safe to say the following veggie-eaters break this mold in a number of ways.

6. Ruben Studdard
Former American Idol contestant Ruben Studdard, also known as the Velvet Teddybear, is known for his deep soulful voice and his sweet demeanor. Being from the South, Studdard also loves soul food and the rich, fatty homemade Southern delicacies. Wanting to focus on his health, Studdard hired a trainer and changed to a vegan diet in 2010. He now has lost 100 pounds and enjoys dining on vegan soul food.

5. Ozzy Osbourne
Rocker Ozzy Osbourne, former front man for Black Sabbath, has a history of legendary stage antics, not least of which was biting the head off of a bat at one show. He is also known for his foray into reality TV with the show, 'The Osbournes'. Though his reality show depicted Ozzy as a much more laid-back fellow, few would expect him to go vegan. That's just what he did though, after watching the documentary 'Forks Over Knives' which links animal protein to degenerative diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

4. Bill Clinton
Anyone who remembers President Bill Clinton's time in office knows that he struggled with his diet like most Americans. Clinton was known for his love of fast food and basically ate anything that could clog an artery. After he had some close calls with his health and had to have bypass surgery, he started to rethink his diet. At the suggestion of his doctor, Caldwell Esselstyn (Forks Over Knives), Clinton adopted a vegan diet and has had no further serious health problems since.

3. Casey Kasem
Iconic radio host Casey Kasem reportedly saw a steer slaughtered when he was very young. He stopped eating meat for months after, but eventually reverted because everyone ate meat at that period in time. During the 1970's though, his compassion for animals led him to a vegetarian diet. What is most remarkable about Kasem, is the fact that he then switched to a vegan diet when he was in his 70's. Most people don't make major dietary changes that late in life, but Kasem did to be true to his convictions and to help his health.

2. Mike Tyson
As a boxer, it is a given that Mike Tyson would have a violent history, but his may be more violent than others. He has a troubled personal history of alleged spousal abuse to his first wife Robin Givens and, in the ring, he is perhaps best known for biting Evander Holyfield's ear during a fight. In more recent history though, the fighter seems to have turned over a new leaf, showing his comical side in the movie 'The Hangover' and in the Herman Cain 'Funny or Die' campaign ad spoof. Tyson also showed more of his softer side when he switched to a vegan diet in 2009. Say what you will about the man, but he is definitely not predictable.

1. Leonardo Da Vinci
Always ahead of his time, Leonardo Da Vinci was a vegan hundreds of years before the word vegan was ever uttered. The artist and inventor was known to turn away any food made from animal products. We don't know why he refused to eat animal products, but we do know that he was extremely unique in doing so at that moment in history. Perhaps one might even call Da Vinci the first vegan in Western culture.
