Vegan Doughnuts Rated Best in New York

The all-vegan doughnut shop, Dun-Well Doughnuts, was ranked best doughnut shop in New York by the New York Daily News. Doughnuts usually aren't the first food that comes to mind when talking about veganism. Vegan doughnuts do indeed exist though and Dun-Well Doughnuts have created a wide variety of delectable flavors to chose from like french toast and peanut butter and jelly.

According to the Daily News, owners Christopher Hollowell and Dan Dunbar say the secret to their great-tasting doughnuts is the locally-sourced organic ingredients, such as applesauce. They also credit their success to an old family recipe that has been slightly modified over the years, but still produces delicious doughnuts.

You can purchase your own Dun-Well doughnuts at their shop on the border of East Williamsburg and Bushwick. Each doughnut costs between $1.25 and $2.50 or you can purchase a dozen for $25.00.

"The Artist" Star's Academy Award Show Collar Auctioned for Charity

Uggie in his Oscar Night Chopard Dog Collar
Who couldn't love Uggie, the adorable break-out star from this year's best picture, 'The Artist'? He was definitely one of the best dressed for Oscar night, in a custom dog collar made from 18k gold and black satin. Swiss jeweler, Chopard, made it especially for the rescue dog turned movie star, and even engraved his name into the gold bone. And now Uggie's ritzy dog collar will be auctioned off to benefit the Los Angeles dog rescue group, the Amanda Foundation.

Not only is it inspiring to see how Uggie has come so far from the pound to the spotlight, but we love that he and Chopard are also giving back to help other dogs live happy lives. Since Uggie is a rescue dog himself, it is only fitting that he help other dogs find their forever homes.

Vegans and Vegetarians at the 2012 Oscars

Check out some of our favorite vegan and vegetarian celebrities at the 2012 Oscars. We think they hit it out of the park with their fashion choices.
Natalie Portman in Vintage Christian Dior
Olivia Wilde in Gucci
Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen

And Missi Pyle not only wore aqua, but also "green" for the big night. Her gown was an eco-friendly, cruelty free, mineral-dyed "peace" silk gown by Miami-born designer Valentine Delfino. We think she looks stunning.

"Delicious Irony" in Vegetarian Restaurant Location

Image via Bury Free Press
A former butcher shop in Bury, UK is being transformed into a vegetarian restaurant. The shop, which still has the word "butcher" carved into it's stone facade, will now serve patrons an all-vegetarian assortment of dishes by owner, Joseph Taylor.

Taylor was raised as a vegetarian and wanted to provide more options for vegetarians in the area. He also likes the idea of housing his restaurant in the former butcher shop.
"There's a delicious irony in that. Bury doesn't have anywhere that caters for vegetarians, or at least it didn't until now. There was a gap in the market for people like us who are passionate about animals," he said
The restaurant, called Josef's Vegetarian Cafe, opens today.

Gweneth Paltrow: Not a Vegetarian but a Vegan Spokesmodel?

Gweneth Paltrow has agreed to be the spokesmodel for an Austrian Supermarket's line of vegan and vegetarian meals.

The actress, who describes herself as a part-time vegetarian, will be the face of Spar Supermarkets vegan and vegetarian entrees.

Even though Paltrow is not a vegetarian, Dr. Gerhard Drexel, director of SPAR, enthusiastically defended choosing her.
"Gwyneth Paltrow is the ideal of the modern day, food-aware young woman, who knows having meatless meals is a good idea now and again. She loves the idea behind our new product line. We are overjoyed to have Gwyneth on board.”
We definitely don't have a problem with people being a partial vegetarian (any move toward more conscious living is great in our book), but we find it odd that a vegan and vegetarian line wouldn't pick a spokesmodel who actually followed the diet. There are many gorgeous and talented vegetarian and vegan actresses (Natalie Portman, Portia Di Rossi, Emily Deschanel, Olivia Wilde) who might have been better choices.

What do you think?

Lab-Grown Meat: Real Meat Grown in a Tube

Image via BBC
Dutch scientists are making the next Big Mac in a test tube.  Professor Mark Post of Maastricht University in the Netherlands is working with his team to create strips of muscle and fat that can be combined together to create an edible hamburger. They are using bovine stem cells to create the tissue and hope to create the first lab-grown hamburger by the end of the year.

According to a BBC article by Pallab Ghosh, investors and scientists are developing the meat-growing process to limit the environmental damage of traditional meat production. Dr. Post elaborated on the benefit of lab meat.
"It will help reduce land pressures. Anything that stops more wild land being converted to agricultural land is a good thing. We're already reaching a critical point in availability of arable land," he said.
Though the team plans on finishing their burger by the end of this year, it will take time to perfect their process for commercial implications. They predict that their first burger will taste rather bland. A tasty and affordable lab burger probably won't be on the market until around ten years from now.

Would you eat a lab-grown burger?

Our First Vegan President?

It's president's day and, to celebrate, we wanted to highlight our first vegan president. Okay, so he wasn't a vegan during his time in office, actually far from it. In fact, if you had told anyone in the 90's that Bill Clinton would one day swear off meat and cheese, you'd get more than one person laughing in your face.
Image via Flickr

Clinton, notorious for his love of burgers (particularly McDonalds), only changed his ways after a couple of intense health scares. According to a CNN interview with Sanjay Gupta, Clinton had made some moderate changes in his diet, but still experienced a blockage in his artery.
"I essentially concluded that I had played Russian roulette," Clinton said, "because even though I had changed my diet some and cut down on the caloric total of my ingestion and cut back on much of the cholesterol in the food I was eating, I still -- without any scientific basis to support what I did -- was taking in a lot of extra cholesterol without knowing if my body would produce enough of the enzyme to support it, and clearly it didn't or I wouldn't have had that blockage. So that's when I made a decision to really change."
So is it possible for a hamburger and doughnut loving guy to happily become a vegan? According to Clinton, it is. Even though he had to give up his junk food, he has learned to enjoy the vegan diet and all the health benefits that go along with it.
"I like the vegetables, the fruits, the beans, the stuff I eat now," Clinton told Gupta
Check out the hilarious Phil Hartman poking fun at Clinton's love of McDonalds.

And here is a recent video in which Clinton talks about his new diet.

Ellen DeGeneres, Portia DeRossi and Chrissie Hynde to Open Vegan Restaurant

If you live in the San Fernando Valley in California, a new vegan restaurant will soon be coming your way. Comedian Ellen DeGeneres, actress Portia DeRossi and musician Chrissie Hynde, all vegans, have joined forces to open a new (currently nameless) vegan restaurant with a menu by chef Tal Ronner.
Image via Flickr
DeGeneres has been a vegan for four years and even runs a blog entitled "Going Vegan with Ellen". This will be her first venture though into the world of vegan restaurant ownership. Portia DeRossi, Ellen's wife, has recently converted to the vegan diet as well.
Image by Peter Tea via Flickr
Chrissie Hynde, on the other hand, has been either vegetarian (and most recently vegan) since 1969, and she previously owned a vegan restaurant in Akron, OH called "Vegiterranean". Though popular, Vegiterranean took a hit during the recession and had to shut down in 2011.

We are excited to see what this business venture will produce since each of these women bring such interesting perspectives and backgrounds to the table. The restaurant should be open later this year and we can't wait.

PETA's Done it Again - Mixing Sex with Violence

PETA is nothing if not controversial and their, "My Boyfriend Went Vegan" commercial is another perfect example of just how far they'll go.

Image Via Youtube
In the ad, a woman wears a neck brace and appears to be in pain as she shuffles through the street in nothing but underwear and a coat. The ad suggests she is suffering from a disorder called BWVAKTBOOM (Boyfriend Went Vegan and Knocked the Bottom Out of Me) which they suggest results from aggressive sex. The woman returns to her house to see her boyfriend patching up a hole in the wall caused, we assume, by her head hitting it. She throws the man some veggies and gives him a smile.

Of course, PETA claims the ad was intended to be humorous and simply shows how veganism can improve your sex life. Many are raising eyebrows though as it seems to equate sex and pain when it comes to women.

Earlier this month, we commented on PETA's plans to release a porn site that would feature sexual videos as well as videos of animals being tortured. We found this to be an odd mix of imagery, but it seems that PETA wants to go even further down this path by merging the themes of sex and violence in this one ad campaign.

We will admit that it was distubing to see the half-dressed woman flinching and limping in a neck brace along the street. That kind of pain should never be a by-product of sex. We also feel it is just sad and pathetic to make light of abuse, no matter what the end goal.

Though PETA claims no harm and that the ad was intended to be funny, we think they are missing the mark with this kind of "humor". PETA has been essentially tone-deaf to the growing concerns of many of their long-time supporters. It will be interesting to see if they will have to change their tactics as people start to cease their support for the group over stunts like this.

Five Lessons From School Chris Brown Needs to Learn

Photo via Flickr
Chris Brown, who three years ago beat his girlfriend Rihanna, returned to the Grammy awards last night to not only perform, but also win best R & B Album. He returned with little to no controversy and even received a standing ovation for his performance.

With his return, we've noticed that there seems to be a troubling trend in celebrity circles. People seem to think that beating and violence are wrong, but not really that wrong. You can make the rounds, say you're sorry and then forget about the whole unpleasant incident and move on. It's what happened to Michael Vick, Charlie Sheen and Chris Brown, among others.

While Brown, like anyone else, deserves a second chance, we feel that he hasn't done enough to be so warmly accepted back. You need to prove, through your deeds that you have changed and learned from your actions. In that spirit, we thought Brown could use some guidance from some very simple lessons we learned in school.

1. Say you're sorry like you really mean it.

Instead of just making the rounds on the talk shows and giving hollow apologies, Brown could have used this opportunity to give back to others by helping them understand how his actions were wrong. He could have volunteered at a women's shelter to recognize the damage he did. He could have worked with young boys to talk about the mistakes he made. Words without deeds to back them up are just shallow.

2. You have to EARN respect. It's not just given to you.

Brown and his fans seem to think that he is entitled to fame and success just because he was previously successful. No one is guaranteed a popular career and the respect of their peers. Everyone, including Brown, will be judged based on their actions as well as their talent. Everyone must continually earn the respect and adoration of others through the actions they choose to take. Fame is not a given right.

3. Use your words.

Well, this is obvious. When you get upset, you never raise your fists or lash out in violence. Either use your words or walk away.

4. Keep your hands to yourself.

This is another obvious lesson that you don't lay hands on another person, especially in anger.

5. If you need help, just ask.

We realize that Brown is human and that he may need help with anger issues. There is no shame in asking for it. There are many support groups and clinical psychologists who are trained in addressing anger and violence issues. If he doesn't address these now, it will only pop back up in his future.

Disclaimer: We realize that this article is not directly related to veganism and vegetarianism, but it deals with a pervasive blindness to violence which encompasses abuse and cruelty to animals.

The Biggest Loser's Biggest Problem

Photo via Flickr
We've noticed that NBC's melodramatic weight-loss reality show, The Biggest Loser has a bit of a credibility problem. While execs may market the show as a transformative, health-conscious program to help the dramatically obese overcome their weight problems, they are actually much more concerned about product placement.

Now we know that every show has to worry about the bottom line, but the Biggest Loser has allowed sponsorship to creep into the core of  their show, which is particularly troubling when you consider that the show positions itself as one of the top educational programs on health and wellness. The focus instead seems to be on calorie control as contestants, trainers and dietiticians regularly take breaks to discuss how X or Y product (always show sponsors) will help them reach their weight-loss goals.

Where we, as vegans and vegetarians, find the most cognitive dissonance is in the sponsorship of Jennie O Turkey. Jennie O is plugged in almost every episode of the Biggest Loser. Contestants are shown how to use turkey in every meal, from breakfast through dinner. Though turkey may be a healthier choice than pork or beef, it isn't the healthiest choice.

It's inspiring to think that a show like the Biggest Loser could actually be used to help people discover ways to become healthier, instead of just cut calories. Even trainer Bob Harper, who was a vegan until recently, rarely discussed his dietary choices on the show, we're guessing because they would have been in opposition to Jennie O.

We don't even think that a strictly vegan diet needs to be pushed on the show, but it would be nice if they allowed an open dialogue about what really is healthy based on sound science. With sponsored plugs sprinkled into the programming, we doubt this will ever happen, but it is a nice thought.

V is for Veggie and Valentine

Photo via Veggie Connection
If you're looking for that last-minute Valentine's date, you may be in luck. A new vegetarian matchmaking site could be your answer. Veggie Connection offers online matchmaking for vegetarians, vegans, raw-foodists and those who follow a macrobiotic diet.

Aside from the veggie angle, the site seems rather conventional. Anyone can browse singles and even send free "ice breaker" messages to anyone on the site. After that though, you must become a member to continue your communication. The site offers silver and gold memberships that range anywhere from $60 to $80 a year or monthly for around $20.

Though it costs to join, people looking for someone to share their lives and their diet might find it worth the while. At least, with Veggie Connection, they won't have to worry about the restaurant choice. As for everything else, well that is another story.

A PETA Porn Site, You're Kidding, Right?

Photo via Flickr
Well, PETA has one-upped their provocative ads and stunts by going fully triple X.

The group, according to the Telegraph, is planning to launch a porn site under a new .xxx domain.

The site will be a mingling of pornographic content and graphic images of animal suffering.

The plan is already raising a few eyebrows for using sex and specifically provocative images of women to promote animal rights. Anti-PETA Facebook groups such as "Real Women Against PETA" and "Vegetarians and Vegans Against PETA" have already started springing up online.

We at Veggie Scene are no prudes, but we do find it particularly troubling that PETA is intermingling sex and violence. Who is to say that many people won't go to the site specifically for images of suffering animals interspersed with sex. Let's face it, there are a lot of sickos out there.

It's also slightly disturbing that a group that promotes animal rights is focusing primarily on exploiting women to spread its message. Perhaps a more "equal opportunity" site would have made this seem a little less disingenuous. It just seems that PETA wants to shock without really caring about the efficacy of their stunt. Somehow, we doubt that horny dudes at their computers will suddenly shift their focus to the plight of animals. We will see though, as PETA's porn site is set to go live any day.

Ellen DeGeneres Offers Bill O'Reilly Her Employee Discount

Photo via Flickr
We adore animal-lover, vegan and funny-woman extrodinaire, Ellen DeGeneres so we were upset to hear how a right-wing group was calling for her to be fired as a spokeswoman for JC Penney. You see, according to the group One Million Moms (who actually only have around 40,000 members) you can't be a good spokeswoman if you're gay.

Luckily, we aren't the only people who rallied behind Ellen after this group's attack. Supporters flooded the One Million Moms Facebook page and filled it with pro-gay and anti-bullying comments.

Even the staunchly right-wing commentator Bill O'Reilly came to the funny lady's defense. During his show on FOX News, O'Reilly said the following:

“What is the difference between a McCarthy era communist blacklist in the 50s and the Million Moms saying, ‘Hey, JCPenney and all you other stores, don’t you hire any gay people, don’t you dare’ What is the difference?”
Ellen has responded to the support from fans and O'Reilly by thanking them on her show and she even offerred a special token of her gratitude to O'Reilly.
"You (O'Reilly) didn't really make it clear if you were going to shop at JCPenney, but if you do you can use my employee discount any time you want."

India's Fashion Week Goes Vegan

Image via Flickr
Forget the furs and the leather. This year the FDCI (Fashion Design Council of India) and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) have joined forces to host an all-vegan fashion week in New Delhi.

According to an article in The Times of India by Garima Sharma, the Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week will feature cruelty-free clothing by many of India's top designers. The week will also feature discussions and education about veganism to try to promote the concept to designers and celebrities.

Poorva Joshipura, the chief functionary of PETA in India, helped to organize the partnership with FDCI. Joshipura told the Times that he was excited about participating in fashion week.
"Fashion is about all things beautiful, and we shouldn't take innocent lives to look beautiful. The world over, initiatives take place during fashion weeks, and we're delighted to explore this partnership with FDCI."

We at Veggie Scene think it's fantastic that India has chosen to show it's compassionate side during fashion week. We're a little tired of Western fashionistas such as Rachel Zoe screaming, "I die!" every time she picks up a leather or fur coat. The designers of India have shown you can still "die" over a look without the look having to die for you.

Forcing Meat on Vegan Children, How Would You React?

Photo via Flickr
The ABC program "What Would You Do?" is getting ready to tackle the issue of vegan-bashing. If you've ever seen the show, you know that actors portray a specific controversial scenario in a public setting to see how bystanders react.

This Friday, the program will enlist actors playing an overbearing meat-loving couple, a waitress, and a vegan mom and her young daughter. The meat lovers will openly question and dismiss the dietary choices of the vegan mother and daughter.

According to an article on the ABC site by Tami Sheheri the scene unfolds like this:
When a couple forces a hot dog on a young girl in a New Jersey restaurant, neighboring diners are confused and surprised; the girl’s mother had clearly said that the family does not eat meat, dairy or animal by-products.
“Everyone eats hamburgers, it’s un-American not to eat meat,” said the man, urging the girl to enjoy the hot dog.
“So she gets no protein,” added his companion.
It will be interesting to see how the other diners react to this situation, particularly when the mother leaves to go to the restroom and the meat lovers try to force the little girl to eat a hot dog. Regardless of how one feels about the diet, it would be difficult to watch any strangers pressure a little girl to do something against her mother's wishes. You can see how the scene unfolds on "What Would You Do?" this Friday on ABC.

Papa Don't Preach, Just Give Me 50 Pizzas

Photo via Flickr
What does Madge eat after a long day of Superbowl Halftime rehearsal? Well Pizza ofcourse. Madonna picked up the tab and left a generous tip for 50 Papa John's pizzas for the performers and crew during Superbowl halftime rehearsal. And, for herself, she ordered up a large veggie pizza with no cheese.

Maybe it's all the vegan pizza that is keeping Madonna looking fabulous and strong after almost 30 years of performing. From what we saw, it must be working.

Vegan Smackdown?

Daniel Bryan. (Image via Flickr)
Okay, we at Veggie Scene will admit that we're not the biggest WWE fans. However, when we heard about a popular WWE wrestler who followed a completely vegan diet, our interest was peaked.

Daniel Bryan stands at 5'10", weighs 210 pounds, can break a chair over your head, oh and follows a strictly vegan diet. Not only does Bryan wrestle as a vegan, he was even crowned the United States Champion.

So Bryan seems to be proving that you can follow a vegan diet no matter what your profession or fitness level. That said, Dave Scott, who won six Ironman triathlons while on a vegan diet, has recently commented on Bryan's veganism and stressed the importance of athlete vegans strictly monitoring their diets to make sure they get all of the needed nutrients and vitamins.

In an interview with Corey Erdman of The Score, Scott professed the benefits of a vegan diet but also stressed some of the pitfals that vegan athletes could face when planning their diets. Scott particularly stressed the dangers of consuming too many soy products.
"People think gee, if I have soy, it’ll help my calcium stores, it’ll help my bone density, it’ll help my electrolytes. And it’s really false. The soy actually negates the calcium absorption. Soy has phytoestrogens. It throws off men and women’s hormone levels. The amount of phytoestrogens is staggering in soy-based food. The unfermented ones, which are tempeh and miso and natto are the best ones. People should eat those."
Read the entire interview here.

Based on Bryan's physique, we think he probably monitors his diet pretty closely and proves that even athletes who want bulk and muscle can follow a vegan diet. What do you think?

PETA to Obama: How About Some Veggie Wings?

Photo via Flickr
In preparation for the big game yesterday, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) wrote a letter to Obama's personal chef, urging her to choose veggie wings for this year's Superbowl.

The animal rights organization not only encouraged the Obamas to go veggie for the game, they also handed out free samples of veggie wings in D.C. and Indianapolis.

Here is a sample of the letter from PETA to the white house chef, as reported by the Washington Examiner:

I’m not sure whether you will be watching the Super Bowl this coming weekend, but I suspect you will be cooking up a storm for the President and First Family's Super Bowl evening. I’m also not sure if you have heard that 600 million, yes million, chickens will lose their wings and their lives just for this one game. That's why I am making a special request to you:  please will you serve up some delicious, totally cholesterol-free, tasty, and cruelty-free faux wings for this event?  Although President Clinton's chef cooked veggie burgers for him and made vegetarian meals for Chelsea, I think you would be making history.  I doubt faux chicken wings, although they are easy to find nowadays in any grocery store, have been served in the White House ever before.
So what did the Obamas end up having for the Superbowl? Well, let's just say that they didn't seem to take notice of the the faux wings suggestion. In fact, the menu, released by the White House, included a who's who of meats and dairy products. Check out the official menu below.
– Bratwurst
– Kielbasa
– Cheeseburgers
– Deep Dish Pizza
– Buffalo Wings
– German Potato Salad
– Twice Baked Potatoes
– Snyders Potato Chips and Pretzels
– Chips and Dips
– Salad
– Ice Cream
– Beverages including the following beers: Hinterland Pale Ale & Amber Ale (from Wisconsin), Yuengling Lager and Light (from Pennsylvania) and White House Honey Ale.
So it looks like the Obamas are pretty far from the idea of adding a faux meat to the Superbowl lineup. We are actually kind of surprised that there weren't more healthy options, especially since Mrs. Obama is focused on promoting healthy eating choices. We know that an all-veggie Superbowl is out of the question, but maybe they could add a veggie chili next year. Just a suggestion.

Mostly Veggie Beats Out Mostly Meat in Superbowl of Chili

Photo via Flickr

Sheboygan Wisconsin is located smack dab in the middle of meat and cheese country. This is a state where the local football fans are referred to as cheeseheads. That said, a local Sheboygan woman, Heather Besaw, was able to win the area's annual Superbowl of Chili with her "half vegetarian" recipe made up primarily of vegetables with just a small amount of meat.

Is it vegetarian? Well . . . no, but it is still quite a feat for a largely-veggie dish to beat all of the meat-laden chili dishes. Even Green Bay Packers guest judge, Chris Jacke, said it was "very good".

Besaw was shocked to win her first entry into a cooking contest. As reported by the Sheboygan Press, Besaw didn't expect her recipe to win.
"Are you kidding me?" she blurted as her name was called.
"I am in complete shock," she said. "We seriously did not think we would win. People don't like vegetables."
Could Besaw's win be evidence that more people are warming to the idea of veggie-rich dishes? Could there even possibly be a vegan or vegetarian Superbowl winner in the future? At least the odds look a little less daunting now.
