Fashion Friday: Magic Carpet Yoga Mats

Who says your yoga mat can't be fashionable?

Definitely not artist Sophie Leininger who created Magic Carpet yoga mats.

Leininger hand-drew original mat designs to resemble traditional and Southwestern rugs. The designs are then sustainably printed onto the mats.

The mats are striking and have a handmade quality that makes them charming. The colors are also so rich and beautiful, they are sure to add even more joy to your yoga session.

Even though we love the mat designs, we also appreciate the fact that the mats are non-toxic and phthalate-free.

At a reasonable $85 a mat, almost anyone can take a magic carpet ride. Purchase your own here.

The Daily Show Takes a Jab at Pink Slime

Apparently Jon Stewart had a rude awakening when he discovered his beloved cheese burger might be filled with pink slime.

The host of the Daily Show took on the issue with the patented humor we've come to expect from the "best f#@king news team ever".

We particularly liked, however, the fact that he called out the meat industry, fast-food chains and grocery stores who have had no problem selling these products to consumers until recently. Check out the entire clip below:

Barista, There's A Bug in My Frappuccino, Make That Thousands of Bugs

Image via Wikipedia
Vegan blog "This Dish is Veg" recently revealed that the Starbuck's Strawberry Frappucino may not include dairy, but is definitely not vegan.

The drink is dyed using Cochineal extract or, in layman's terms, crushed up insects.

Cochineal bugs produce carminic acid that helps to deter predators, but it also produces a brilliant red dye when the bugs are dried and powderized. This powder can be used to color food, cosmetics and textiles.

Starbucks claims that they were using the cochineal extract in order to make a shift to all-natural ingredients. We're sure the customers who purchased the Strawberry Frappuccinos didn't figure that bugs would be included in those "natural" ingredients though.

In fact, you know what has a natural red color? Strawberries. Why in the world does Starbucks need to add a dye to what is essentially a strawberry smoothie?

Well, at least we now know why Starbucks charges so much for their beverages. It's all those little extras.

Huffington Post's Meat Debate: A Response

Image via Flickr
Earlier this month, the Huffington Post published a debate entitled "Can It Be More Ethical To Eat Meat?"

Two "experts" in the field, pro-veggie columnist Ellen Kramer of The Edgy Veggie and pro-meat columnist Daniel Klein of The Perennial Plate, wrote arguments for and against the morality of eating meat.

We noticed some pretty glaring problems with this "debate" right from the start.

1. There was no effort made to respond to the other writers' points. The debate was made up of pro and con columns placed side by side, written as if they had never seen the other's writing.

2. The debate topic was misleading as there are a variety of ways to eat both veggies or meat and varying degrees of what people consider ethical. It's safe to say, the pro-meat column didn't argue the benefits of the typical Western meat-laden diet which is all made possible by factory farming.

3. The pro-meat argument was making some pretty daring mental leaps and assumptions to try to frame meat as healthy and ethical.

Focusing on the pro-meat column specifically, we wanted to point out some problems with Klein's logic as it applies to the debate topic.

1. Klein only focuses on "limited" consumption of meat and only using meat that is humanely and organically raised, and allowed to graze. Though we all know that this type of meat is optimal to factory farmed meat, it isn't what the majority of Americans are eating and it doesn't address the question of whether it is more ethical to eat meat, which could include any number of "types" of meat that have been produced in any number of ways.

2. Klein claims that grazing animals help the environment, but he doesn't address how massive meat consumption is leading to animals being over-packed into factory farms and fed corn in order to meet demands. He acts as if grazing organic beef could supply the entire market of meat-consumers, which it sadly cannot at this point.

Due to the demand for meat, animals are being bred at an alarming rate, creating an unhealthy amount of cattle, that also produce an extremely unhealthy amount of methane gas. They also require food, which usually comes in the form of corn. We are in the midst of a global food shortage and the corn being fed to cattle could easily end this crisis if it was made available to those starving.

3. Klein claims that the only danger to eating meat happens from over-eating or consuming factory-farmed meat. He says that limited consumption of organic grass-fed beef is healthy. According to a 28-year Harvard study, those claims just aren't true.

The Harvard study found that any daily consumption of red meat (a portion the size of a deck of cards) can increase your chances of death by 13%. The China Study by Dr. Colin Campbell also found that animal protein can increase your risk of cancer and heart disease. Still Klein claims that eating organic meat can have substantial health benefits.

If Klein was trying to make the case that meat-eaters should limit their consumption and only purchase organic, humanely-raised beef, we would agree with him. If you are going to eat meat, that is the most humane and ethical way to go. That, however, does not answer the question of whether eating meat is more ethical than going vegetarian.

By skewing the argument into one of responsible meat-eating, we feel that Klein lost sight of the bigger picture, in which the only way to meet the demand for meat in America is to create a destructive factory-farming system.

Klein even acknowledges that there needs to be less meat-consumption and that people should consider going vegetarian, yet he still argues that eating meat is more ethical than a vegetarian diet. We just don't seem to understand that logic, but we do credit him for encouraging people to consider the vegetarian diet. We still find it troubling though, that he is arguing the ethical superiority of eating meat.

Top Five Kitchen Tools Vegans Can't Live Without

Image via Flickr
Some kitchen tools are really better than others, especially when it comes to vegan cooking.

If you've recently gone vegan, you may want purchase the following tools to make your life easier from the start. They allow you to make a range of recipes using fresh organic fruits, veggies, nuts and legumes.

5. A Mandolin
Make any kind of chip you desire with a mandolin. The device cuts veggies into thin slices which can be used for recipes or just as a healthy chip alternative. For example, cut a sweet potatoe into thin slices and bake with a spritz of oil and some sea salt. Once you use a mandolin, you'll be shocked you ever lived without one.

4. A rice steamer
A rice steamer is literally a time-saver as it allows you to easily set and forget your rice while you are making other foods in the kitchen. It's the ultimate multitasking tool. Most rice steamers also come with a veggie-steaming tray which can also make your life much simpler by preparing two foods at once.

3. A food processor
A no-brainer for vegans, a food processor allows you to chop nuts, make salsa, make hummus or any variety of foods that need quick chopping. We find food processors especially handy for chopping onions without tears.

2. A blender
There is some overlap with the blender and food processor, but we like to have a blender around specifically for smoothies. There are so many easy vegan smoothie recipes that use raw organic fruits and veggies, that you would never run out of options for breakfast. It's a must have for vegans, but especially for raw vegans.

1. A good set of knives
Many might think that a knife set would only be valuable to omnivores and meat eaters, but vegans do a lot of vegetable and fruit chopping. They need a variety of knives that will handle all sizes and shapes of foods, from a head of lettuce to an avocado. A full-knife set is a must, but if you can only purchase a few knivese get a good chopping knife and a paring knife.

PETA: Just One Long Elaborate Joke

Image via Flickr
Okay, you got us.

We thought you were serious there for a while, but it turns out that the joke is on us. We finally get it now.

This whole PETA thing has just been one long elaborate joke, right?

That could be the only excuse for all the nonsense going on.

Let's face it, most of PETA's shenanigans of late have had very little to do with animal rights and more to do with half (or fully) naked women, semi-coherent celebrities and occasional stunts to get attention.

We don't really know how these things further the cause of animal rights . . . actually, we think they just end up making all animal rights activists look downright stupid. Their actions have been so bizarre in fact, we think PETA might just be building up to an April Fool's "Gotcha!"

So, just to help out those of you who haven't seen some of the clues leading up to the big practical joke reveal, we thought we'd compile some of PETA's odder moments over the past months below.

CLUE #1 - PETA is Launching a Porn Site

It's true. Like many companies and organizations, PETA purchased the .xxx subdomain for their site. Unlike most organizations who purchased the .xxx subdomain to prevent pornographic content under their business names, PETA decided to use the subdomain to start a porn site.

They are planning to produce original pornographic content and show it as well as videos of animal abuse. Now that sounds like a great idea, right?

CLUE #2 - Courtney Stodden is Promoting PETA in Their Latest Ad

If you don't know who Courtney Stodden is, pat yourself on the back. No one should ever care who Courtney Stodden is but, since you might not know, she is the child bride (sixteen when married) of 51-year-old actor, Doug Hutchison.

Saying Stodden acts ditzy is really giving ditzy people a bad name. She acts as though she is a drugged Jessica Rabbit. If there is any confusion, just see her "music video" below for clarification.

The fact that PETA would use this girl as a spokesperson is just confusing and bizarre.

CLUE #3 - PETA is Making Light of Abuse

In another installment of odd advertising ploys, PETA released an ad that seemed to promote and glorify abuse.

The "My Boyfriend Went Vegan" campaign showed a woman in a neck brace, limping down a street in nothing but underwear and a coat. We then see that her current condition was caused by a night of aggressive sex. When she comes home, she finds her boyfriend patching up a hole that was caused by her head hitting the wall.

Apparently when boyfriends go vegan, they bash your head through a wall during sex. Heads up ladies!

CLUE #4 - Every PETA Protest Looks Like an Orgy or Like Someone Lost a Bet

Look up images of any PETA protest and you're bound to see naked people. Sometimes they will be smeared in fake blood, other times they will be painted to look like animals and sometimes they are even making out. It gets your attention, but does it really get the message across?

Let's face it, how many guys are going to look at naked ladies and rethink their leather usage (unless they're thinking about leather usage in the bedroom, that is)?

PETA seems to be directing most of their marketing and even protests in the direction of sex or shock value. To us, it just ends up looking silly and makes the whole movement seem less credible.

Photo via Flickr

All of this evidence combined leads us to believe that either PETA is composed of frat boys looking for a way to continue their shenanigans off campus, or exhibitionists who want one more excuse to strip down in public.

We're no prudes, but we just don't get how any of this helps to promote animal rights. As a practical joke though, it's pretty stellar!

Our Favorite Vegetarian TV Characters

As much as we may hate to admit it we love television and, as the Spring season rolls out, we thought we'd take this time to highlight some of our favorite vegetarian characters on the small screen.

Ricardo Tubbs - Miami Vice
Easily the coolest guy to ever sport loafers with a full suit, Tubbs was part of the cult sensation Miami Vice in the 1980's. Though Tubbs spent most of his on-screen time fighting crime or romancing the ladies, when he did make time to eat, he went vegetarian.

Rachel Berry - GLEE
Independent and strong-willed, it's no wonder that the GLEE character Rachel Berry is a vegan. As far as we could find, her character is the only vegan on a television show today, so she really is standing out from the crowd.

Britta Perry - Community
Though Britta can get a little preachy to her study group on the show Community, her heart is always in the right place. Her character cares greatly about almost every issue which, of course, includes vegetarianism.

Lisa Simpson - The Simpsons
Lisa is perhaps our favorite television vegetarian of all time. She acts as the moral compass for her lovable, but somewhat dysfunctional family. When Lisa decided to become a vegetarian, she was met with resistance from her parents, her school and her friends but she stayed true to what she believed.

Spock - Star Trek
Like all Vulcans, Spock is a vegetarian and finds it "highly illogical" to eat meat. In fact, Spock was the first vegetarian character on a television series, which is just another way Star Trek was ahead of its time.

Phoebe Buffay - Friends
Who couldn't love Phoebe? Sure she was a little spacey, and she thought her mother was reincarnated into a stray cat, but she was really the heart of the show Friends. Her character was also a vegetarian for the course of the show and was the first pregnant vegetarian character on a TV series.

Angela Martin - The Office
Perhaps the least typical vegetarian character on television, Angela is a staunch conservative and is extremely judgmental of others and herself. She can't stand anything that is perceived as liberal or progressive. She does, however, love cats and maybe this is why her character is vegetarian.

Carrie Underwood Goes From Vegetarian to Vegan

Country star Carrie Underwood recently revealed that she has gone from a vegetarian to a vegan. The singer told the Australian talk show The Circle (like an Aussie version of The View) that she decided to make the move to cut out dairy and eggs because she's lactose intolerant.

Underwood grew up on a farm in Oklahoma. She has always loved animals and when she discovered what was really happening on her farm, she decided to change her diet. She didn't become a complete vegetarian though until moving out of Oklahoma.
"From about thirteen I quit eating red meat and then, living in Oklahoma, its almost impossible to be vegetarian so when I moved away, I was about 21, I became vegetarian. I recently made the switch to vegan because I'm actually kind of lactose intolerant."
Even though Underwood has been vegetarian for a while, her husband, hockey star Mike Fisher, is a total meat eater. Underwood jokingly told The Circle that he's Canadian and they like their meat. See the full interview below:

Forks Over Knives Says Vegan is the New Viagra

Photo via Flickr
The documentary Forks Over Knives takes a look at the research of two doctors, Colin Campbell and Caldwell Esselstyn. Their extensive research over multiple decades revealed how animal protein can contribute to many degenerative diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. They also found that animal protein can produce other problems in the body, one of which is erectile dysfunction.

As stated in the documentary, erectile dysfunction can often be one of the first signs that someone has arterial plaque buildup. With plaque buildup, the blood struggles to flow throughout the body, including to the penis. For many men, erectile dysfunction can be a red flag that they are at an increased risk of a heart attack.

So what should men do? Well, they could continue to eat a Western diet and take Viagra. They won't improve their health, but they will be able to have sex, albeit with the help of a pill. They could also just switch to a vegan diet.

A vegan diet, free from plaque-producing animal proteins, can help repair the endothelial cells and eradicate blockages. It can allow the body to heal from the damage that is limiting blood flow. And, when you increase blood flow, there is no need for Viagra. Just take a look at the clip below to here from the doctors and vegan patients about how it has worked for them.

Martina Navratilova: Animal Advocate and Dancing Queen?

    Image via Flickr
Forget March Madness, it's time to watch real fancy footwork on tonight's premier of Dancing With the Stars.

If we're rooting for anyone on the show, it's got to be animal advocate and vegetarian Martina Navratilova. Though she may be considered an underdog, we know she has the competitive drive to rise to the challenge and compete with grace.

Navratilova, a legend in tennis, has also made quite a name for herself in animal rights activism. She has been partnering with groups like PETA since the 1990's and she has never been afraid to speak out on behalf of animals. She also promotes the benefits of a plant-based diet for overall health, as you can see in the video below.

Aside from her involvement in animal rights, we just love Navratilova's determined and generous spirit. In an interview with the L.A. Times, she laid out some of her reasons for participating in the show.
"It really comes down to two things: First, I've always been set on facing my fears and ever since I was 14 and my parents put me in a ballroom dancing class, I’ve had this terrible fear of dancing in public -- I don't even like dancing by myself! I was scared of flying, so I got my pilot's license, I’m scared of dancing, so what better way to conquer my fear of that than to go on the largest dance floor in the world and compete on "Dancing with the Stars"!
And second, I've always been vocal about the importance of staying active and fit, and it's been instrumental in my success on the tennis court and keeping me at the top of my game for so long. And after you hit a certain age, you know, your body starts to change and staying active becomes even that much more important. That's why a few years ago I became AARP's Fitness Ambassador -- and I figure if I'm out there telling folks to get out of their comfort zones, try new activities, and lead healthy lifestyles, I better lead by example. Hopefully by seeing me on the show, people will get motivated to get up and get moving!"
We think it's great that Navratilova is stepping out of her comfort zone to help others. We can't wait to see her dance tonight and we wish her the best of luck!

    Kristen Bell Goes Vegan

    Image via Flickr
It was only a matter of time before Kristen Bell officially became a vegan.

Anyone who throws what can only be called a conniption fit over sloths, has to love animals enough to adopt the vegan diet.

Bell told Women's Health magazine that switching from a vegetarian to a vegan diet had more to do with health than animal advocacy though.

After she watched the documentary Forks Over Knives which links animal protein to many degenerative diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease, Bell decided it was time to go vegan.
"It's more about the health benefits than the ethics, but it's compounded by the fact that I love animals and feel better not eating them."
Bell's fiance, and former meat-eater, Dax Shepard also went vegan. The couple even grows their own veggies in a their front yard. That's pretty darn adorable, if you ask us. Maybe not "sloth" adorable though.

Ricky Gervais: A Big Softie for Animals

We love Ricky Gervais. His digs at shallow celebrities during the Golden Globes were nothing short of hilarious and the UK Office can still make us laugh until we cry. Who knew he was such a softie when it comes to animals though?

Gervais just helped launch a global campaign entitled "Cruelty Free International" that aims to end animal testing for cosmetic products. We love that he cares enough about our furry friends to sign on to this campaign, but we also just love watching him frolic with the bunny in the ad below. Check it out.

We stumbled across Linh La's awesome vegan clothing on Etsy. It looks incredibly comfy, stylish and modern and it is all vegan. La seems to integrate her vegan lifestyle into everything she does. In fact, she not only runs this Etsy store, but she also runs a Loving Hut vegan restaurant. Check out some of her veganwear below:

    White Open Neck Shawl Top

Is Red Meat the New Tobacco? Turns Out Meat is Murder for Humans Too

Red Meat, the new red menace, the new silent killer.

Vegetarians have been warning about the dangers of red meat for years but now a new 28-year Harvard study shows that red meat can have an even greater impact than previously thought.

The study, entitled Red Meat Consumption and Mortality concluded that eating a 3 oz portion of red meat (the size of a deck of cards) could increase your likelihood of death by 13%. Add another portion to your daily intake and that number jumps to 20%.

Why does red meat limit your lifespan? Researchers believe it is a combination of aspects from the amount of iron and saturated fat in red meat, to the nitrates and chemicals used in their preservation and preparation. All of these factors can contribute to cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Researchers still don't know though if there is one factor that supersedes all others.

So what should you do to protect yourself? According to the study, ANY consumption of red meat leads to a shorter life span. In order to avoid the damage from red meat, replace it with servings of legumes, nuts, or even fish. You can also use protein sources such as tofu, tempeh and lowfat dairy.

Personally, we at Veggie Scene find it hard to believe anyone would want to eat red meat based on this study and the pink slime scare that recently hit the news. It seems like the meat industry is just like big tobacco; they try to hide as much information as they can from the consumer and portray their deadly product as masculine or robust when it is actually making us all fat and sick. Just compare the old cigarette ads to the beef ads of today and you'll notice the similarities. We can only hope that one day people become as educated about red meat as they are about tobacco, and we won't see as many instances of cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

The beef commercial below uses Aaron Copeland's composition Rodeo: Hoedown to invoke a robust and rugged Western theme.

The commercial below links meat with tailgating and barbecuing for the big game, linking sports with the consumption of red meat.

The cigarette commercial below shows a man's man who enjoys smoking while working on his car.

The cigarette commercial below links sports to cigarettes through the endorsement of a football player.

Pink Slime: Just Another Reason to Go Veg

If you still eat ground beef in the U.S., chances are pretty high that you've consumed the gelatinous pink goo pictured above. It's called pink slime and it's in around 70% of all ground beef in the United States.

What is pink slime? In the simplest terms, it's highly-processed waste. Meat producers gather all of the inedible parts of the cow that were left after slaughter. They soak it in ammonium hydroxide and blend it into a pink goo. That goo is then mixed into the ground beef as a filler.

Why is pink slime bad? Well, not only does pink slime pose health risks by people eating food soaked in ammonium hydroxide, but there is also a danger that the ammonium hydroxide didn't do it's job. That could leave ample amounts of dangerous bacteria in the food. E Coli and salmonella are just some of the dangerous bacteria strains that can be found in ground beef.

Why do they use pink slime? Meat producers, like any other business, want more bang for their buck. They can make more profit if they pump their ground beef with fillers like pink slime. This works for the meat industry largely because the public was unaware of this practice. Now people are hearing more about pink slime and the dangers involved with it, so the practice might not be as profitable for meat producers anymore.

This is just one more instance that illustrates how the meat industry will say or do anything, even putting your health at risk, to make an extra buck. It's just one more reason to consider eating a vegetarian diet, or even eating more vegetarian meals. At the very least, educate yourself about where your food comes from so that you, and your family, aren't consuming pink fluffy waste.

    Happy International Women's Day!

It's International Women's Day, a day that celebrates women and women's issues (and here you thought it was just another boring Thursday). If you didn't make any big plans to celebrate the day yet, let us suggest a few.

    1. As Tom Haverford would say, treat yo self! Chocolate is the first thing that comes to our minds. Try Endangered Species' vegan collection of chocolate bars. They have a variety of flavors from chocolate mint to cranberry almond.
    2. Give to a charity helping women. There are a range of charities that focus on women's health and safety both locally and globally. The Polaris Project is one of our favorites. They fight against human trafficking, which is unfortunately a growing global problem.
    3. Have a girl's night out, or in. Go out to dinner with some good friends, or cook a delicious vegan dinner at home and invite some friends over. There are a number of wonderful vegan dinner recipes online. Why not pick one and test your culinary skills?
    4. Do something nice for a random woman at work or just out and about. Pay for someone's coffee or leave an encouraging note on a female coworker's desk. This day was originally meant to celebrate working women, so it only makes sense to do something that would make a working woman's day a little brighter.
    5. In keeping with the working theme, take a moment to analyze your career. Are you where you want to be, doing what you want to do? If not, take steps to move toward something else, whether that involves extra school or just a more thorough job hunt.
So have an amazing International Women's Day you awesome veggie sisters!

Sexy Vegetarians or Just Hilarious Web Browsing?

PETA is searching the globe for the sexiest vegetarian and they want you to submit your sexiest photo and answer some questions about why you are such a committed vegetarian or vegan. The lucky winners will receive a free vacation to Hawaii (Oh a girl could dream).

We checked out some of the photos being posted on PETA's website, and we realized something rather quickly:

People trying to look sexy are hilarious!

Sure, some of the photos were perfectly respectable and cute, but most were a mish mash of arched backs and pouty lips, too much eye-makeup and weird poses. Some people even posed with their pets, which was occasionally sweet, but often just weird. Our favorite photos include:
If you think you have what it takes to beat these sexy beasts you can still register, up until March 26th, at peta.org. Good luck sexy britches!
